How To Volunteer
Our community minibus service is entirely staffed by a friendly team of volunteers – but we always need more, especially during the busy summer months.
Are you looking for a rewarding way to help the community of West Wight?
Tony says: The reward for volunteering to help with the bus is the response you get from the passengers to the personal service we are able to give them. A commercial operation could not possibly look after our people as well. Also we pick up a lot of local news by just listening to the chatter on the bus!
Do you feel it is ‘time to give something back?
Alan says: ‘I was drawn to volunteering because I wanted to put something back into the community. I’m not able to commit to a fixed pattern of volunteering. The flexible approach to rostering means I can fit the shifts around my work.’
Have you got time on your hands?
John says: ‘When we recently moved to Freshwater, I had time on my hands and wanted to do something for the community. Being a PA suited me nicely, I enjoy the banter and helping people who wouldn’t get out much if this service wasn’t available. There is a great team of friendly and similar minded volunteers at FYT bus.
If you are retired, volunteering can help keep you active and expand your social life. Our volunteers have diverse backgrounds and interests, and are a great bunch of people to get to know.
If you are of working age but unemployed, volunteering for a charity can be a step towards finding permanent employment. It looks good on your CV, too! Some of our younger recruits have found employment after training and working with FYTbus.
We need volunteers with all sorts of skills – drivers and passenger assistants on our minibuses, office and garage helpers.

To be trained to drive for FYTbus you need to be under 73 years of age and have a driving licence allowing you to drive D1 classified vehicles. We provide FREE training for our drivers to National MiDAS standards.
Our passenger assistants are a key part of our offering to the community and we provide them with training as well – how to provide that little bit extra customer service which is so appreciated by the passengers.
There is no age limit for passenger assistants, indeed one of our keen, regular volunteers is in his eighties. Young people have also volunteered as PAs.
If you are interested do phone the office on 752917. Alternatively you can call into The FYT Bus office at The Broadway, Totland, PO 39 0AX.
